How Does Solidago altissima Tea Benefit Your Health? A Dentist’s Perspective

※ Note on terminology: “背高泡立草” (Seitaka-awadachisou) is the Japanese name for Solidago altissima, also known as tall goldenrod.

Good health matters — and so does thinking about what steps you can realistically take to support it.

When we ask ourselves what we should incorporate into our lives for our health, one key question stands out: “Is this something I can keep up with, without forcing myself?”

Running is one approach some people take for their health
Core exercises are another option some people choose for their health

Running and core exercises are not particularly my strong suit, so I won’t be offering guidance there — but teas and supplements are areas I’m comfortable discussing. Today I’d like to share my thoughts on one I particularly recommend: Solidago altissima tea.

How I Discovered Solidago altissima Tea

As a dentist working with patients every day, I’ve come to feel strongly that the oral environment and overall systemic health are far more closely connected than most people realize.

In this article, I’d like to discuss Solidago altissima tea not only from a health-benefit standpoint, but also from the perspective of how it might fit into everyday life as a sustainable habit.

As I’ve mentioned in other articles, I had long relied on Rakudent Pro. But when a global infectious disease began spreading, I started looking for other supplements and health aids to add to my routine. That search eventually led me to:

・ Ivermectin
・ Nattokinase
・ Nodoknul throat spray

Each of these proved more effective than I anticipated, and I intend to continue using them alongside Rakudent Pro going forward. Solidago altissima tea is a natural extension of that journey — and I’d like to explain why I think it’s worth considering.

* Purchasing and maintaining all of these does involve some cost, so I recommend using them selectively or in partial combination. The most affordable combination for long-term use is Solidago altissima tea together with nattokinase. Nattokinase is also available at stores like Daiso.

What Is Solidago altissima Tea?

Solidago altissima tea is made from the plant known in Japan as Seitaka-awadachisou (tall goldenrod). It is frequently blended with other teas such as hojicha (roasted green tea), giving it a relatively mild and approachable flavor.

Originally known as an invasive plant species, Solidago altissima has in recent years attracted growing interest as a health tea and bath additive.

A wide range of related products are now available through online retailers, and it’s easy to imagine that many buyers have found the experience worthwhile enough to reorder.

Where Does Solidago altissima Grow?

Solidago altissima is an extremely vigorous grower found across a wide range of environments. It commonly appears in vacant lots, roadsides, and other everyday surroundings, making it easy to spot once you know what to look for.

It is not considered directly harmful to humans, but its aggressive growth can affect local ecosystems. Some municipalities actively call for its removal as a result.

The primary concern is that, as a non-native species, Solidago altissima has the potential to outcompete indigenous plants — an impact that cannot be overlooked.

How to Obtain It

While Solidago altissima grows abundantly in the wild, collecting it from someone else’s land without permission is not permitted. For this reason, I personally source it through online retailers such as Amazon or Rakuten, in processed form.

Specifically, I drink it as a prepared tea on a regular basis.

That said, many people do grow it in their own gardens, or harvest it with permission from landowners — drying and chopping the plant themselves to use as a brewed tea or bath additive.

Solidago altissima is not considered toxic, so the risk involved in handling it is low. However, to avoid mistaking it for another plant, it’s a good idea to use a tool like Google Lens for accurate identification.

A Dentist’s View: Tea and the Oral Environment

The Importance of Saliva and Staying Hydrated

Saliva plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy oral environment.

Among its key functions:
・ Inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria
・ Cleansing the oral cavity
・ Protecting the mucous membranes

When fluid intake is insufficient, saliva production decreases — and that can lead to a deterioration of the oral environment.

Making a habit of drinking tea throughout the day is one way to gently reduce that risk.

How Dry Mouth Affects the Whole Body

Dry mouth (xerostomia) goes beyond mere discomfort — it is a recognized risk factor for both tooth decay and gum disease.

Furthermore, a deteriorated oral environment has been suggested to affect overall systemic health as well.

This is why the habits of “drinking fluids regularly” and “choosing something easy to drink” matter more than they might seem over the long term.

The Benefits of Adding Solidago altissima Tea to Your Routine

Solidago altissima tea as a daily health habit

Is It Easy to Drink Every Day?

With any health habit, the most important question is whether you can actually sustain it.

Many Solidago altissima tea products have a mild flavor with little bitterness or unusual taste, making them easy to incorporate as an everyday tea.

Is It Easy to Make a Habit?

Anything that requires elaborate preparation tends to be hard to keep up with over time.

In teabag form, Solidago altissima tea fits naturally into mealtimes or relaxation breaks — making it one of the easier health habits to maintain without extra effort.

A Word of Caution: Keeping Expectations Realistic

As with any health food or supplement, it is not appropriate to expect definitive results for specific symptoms from Solidago altissima tea alone.

The realistic approach is to treat it as:

・ A contribution to daily hydration
・ One part of a broader healthy lifestyle

If you have any symptoms that concern you, please consult a healthcare professional first.

My Personal Experience

Having tried it myself, I can say it was milder than I expected — quite easy to drink, with no strong or unusual aftertaste.

Even for those who are sensitive to strong flavors, I think this tea works well as “one more option in your everyday tea rotation.”

Rather than expecting dramatic change, I think the real value lies in finding something you can naturally keep up with day after day.

Summary: Its Place as Part of a Healthy Routine

Solidago altissima tea is not about chasing dramatic effects — it’s simply one approachable “tea habit” you can weave into daily life.

As a dentist, I believe that from the standpoint of maintaining hydration and supporting the oral environment, this kind of habit is far from meaningless.

Start by asking whether it’s something you can realistically maintain — and try it in whatever way fits naturally into your life.

* This reflects my own personal experience, but I’m confident that those who are genuinely health-conscious will find real value in it.
